Wiring Bonsai And Wire Techniques.

Wiring Bonsai trees is an art form in itself. To shape, style, and eventually create Bonsai, we use wire in our training of Bonsai trees.  Nature and humans work together. Nature inspires, but we must provide the imagination. Wiring Bonsai trees gives us creative freedom. This permission allows us to plant a branch wherever our vision wants us to. It permits us to move the immobile. It enables us to give stability when needed. Wiring is a fundamental technique for bonsai artists. Anyone serious about bonsai should become adept with wire and wiring.

When is the best time for wiring bonsai trees?

Wiring Bonsai Trees. We Will Wire This Branch

Almost any time of year is suitable for wiring and training most tree species.

Once the bonsai has been re-potted, it should always be fastened with a wire that runs up the drainage holes to keep it in place.

Due to the lack of leaves, wiring deciduous trees in the late winter is substantially simpler.

Wiring during the growth season might result in unsightly scars from the wire biting into the bark, so pay attention. Keep an eye on your tree and remove the wire when it’s safe to do so.  ..

Wiring bonsai trees, multiple wire types.

Copper and aluminum wire are the two most common wires used in bonsai.
Copper wire is stronger, but in my experience, it is also less forgiving than aluminum wire.
If not closely monitored, it will inevitably bite into your bonsai, scaring bark and branches alike.

On the other hand, the aluminum wire has one-quarter the strength of copper wire, but it is much simpler to apply and remove.

These two fundamental characteristics make aluminum wire an advantage for the beginner and a benefit for the experienced.

Let's get wiring

It’s preferable to start with the trunk and work your way up to the biggest branch, then the next largest branch, and so on.

When wiring a complete bonsai, wire in the direction of your own body as well.  This allows you to see wiring over any buds, leaves, or branches that your arms and hands may have obscured.

On a practical level, you may cut off the extra wire as soon as you reach the end of the branch, making it easier and safer.

The rule of thumb for selecting the proper gauge wire is to use a wire roughly 1/3 the width of the section of your bonsai that you are planning to wire.
What’s the most “artistic part of bonsai” culture?

Wiring Bonsai trees- Cut the Wire.

Wrap the wire at a 45-degree angle, making sure it is not too tight or too loose.  Bending the trunk or branch should be done with both hands, and it’s critical to keep the trunk or branch as stable as possible as you go.

Be sure to hold the wire from behind with your thumb; bend the wire and not the trunk or branch as you move forward. While wiring Bonsai trees use a wire cutter.

Secure Your Bonsai

Wiring-Bonsai-trees-to-shape-and-bend-the-branches Always secure a Bonsai with a wire that runs up thru the drainage holes at the bottom of the container.
How do you know what season is best to wire your Bonsai for  styling? It depends on what kind of tree you are styling. Pine trees in the fall or early winter, when the sap levels are low, and the trees are more flexible.

Pruning fall-leaf trees in the spring before new leaves sprout is recommended.  You can see the branch structure better when the tree is leafless.

Wiring Bonsai trees to shape and bend the branches #9 After wiring, you may start bending and changing the branches. Hold the edge of the branch with your fingers and bend it from the inside with your thumbs.

To reduce the chance of splitting, don’t move it.  To make straight branches appear more natural, gently twist them.

Guy-wires

Huge, weakened, or old branches are frequently bent to the ground using guy wires. A hard surface root, a robust branch, or even the pot might serve as good anchors for your guy wires.

In most cases, the guy wire is a thin one-millimeter wire. To avoid damaging the branch, wrap a little piece of rubber or plastic around it.

Wire and wiring issues when wiring bonsai plants

It is always good to wire a healthy Bonsai tree. The stress of wiring your Bonsai may hasten its mortality if it is already frail.

Let the Bonsai dry out for a few days before wiring it to make it more flexible and less prone to splitting or breaking.

How to Remove the Wire
-Be Very Careful Here!

Wiring-Bonsai-trees-to-shape-and-bend-the-branches-12The wire should be removed before it eats into the bonsai’s bark.

If you’re using copper wire, it’s a good idea to do weekly checks. If you use aluminum wire, inspect it every two weeks.

You should only use wire cutters to remove the wire. It’s a close certainty to break causing an uncontrollable tear. Wiring is a difficult skill to learn. The more you practice, the better you will become.
